Pregame Preparation Checklist

Call your scheduled partner the night before your game to verify he will be umpiring with you. The least experienced official will do the calling. If the call isn’t made by 9pm, then it’s the other umpire’s responsibility to call. If the umpire you are calling claims that he is not your partner, then call the Assignor.

Verify the place and time of the game, as well as who is working the plate and bases. Also decide what color undershirt you both will wear.

If you are riding to the game together, verify the place to meet. If you are going to meet at the site, decide on the specific location. Go on to the field together.

In case of cancellation, you will ALWAYS receive a phone call by the school at your home phone number, or work number. If you will be at another number, call the school during the day to notify them of the change.

School phone numbers are provided. It is your responsibility to call the school the day of the game to verify that your game is still being played.

If the game is postponed, call me at school if the game is rescheduled for the next day Otherwise email or call me at home me and leave a clear, concise, detailed message about the game. The rescheduled game is yours if you are open and available that day.

Prepare for the game the NIGHT BEFORE. Plan to be at the game site at least 20 minutes prior to the start of the game. This is of utmost importance. Unjustified lateness to a game will result in sanctions.

While getting dressed, you and your partner should discuss:

field/ground rules

slide/interference rule (including responsibility)

handling arguments

signals

fly ball coverage

general mechanics

coaches demeanor

check swing

Remember PROFESSIONALISM for each and every game we are at. Even if you are just at the park watching a game, act as if someone were watching and evaluating your behavior.
